Sally the Sardine

Introduction to the Book

This is the story of Sally the Sardine—a small fish with a big heart, told in gentle rhyme.

In the deep blue sea, where creatures dart and dive, Sally swims a little differently. She doesn’t roar like the big fish or puff up like the proud ones. But she’s brave in her own quiet way.

Through rhyme and rhythm, Sally’s journey shows us how kindness, courage, and being true to yourself can help you find where you belong.

So turn the page, follow the rhyme, and let’s dive into the Sea of Belonging.

A note from the author

When I was young, I often felt like I didn’t quite fit in. Not because I didn’t have friends or fun, but because I sometimes saw the world a little differently.

Years later, I realised something important: the world doesn’t need more people trying to be the same. It needs more people brave enough to be themselves.

That’s where Sally came from. She’s a tiny fish with a gentle soul, and her journey is one I wish someone had told me when I was small.

This book is written in rhyme because there’s something magical about the way rhythm helps us remember what matters. I hope Sally’s story makes your little one smile and maybe, just maybe, helps them feel proud of exactly who they are.

Thank you for reading.

At its heart, this story is about feeling different and discovering that difference is not a weakness, but a strength. Sally’s journey reflects the universal need to feel accepted just as we are, without needing to change to fit in.

  • Kindness and Courage
Though small and quiet, Sally shows true bravery not by being the loudest in the room, but by standing up for what’s right, even when it’s difficult. Her story teaches that kindness and courage often go hand in hand.

  • Friendship and Inclusion
The book gently encourages children to look beyond appearances or popularity when choosing friends. Real friendship is about support, respect, and celebrating each other’s uniqueness.

  • Emotional Awareness
Sally’s story helps young readers identify feelings like loneliness, worry, hope, and joy. The rhyming format makes these emotional themes more accessible and memorable, encouraging emotional literacy from an early age.

  • The Power of Quiet Strength
Sally doesn’t win by being the biggest or boldest she leads with empathy, thoughtfulness, and quiet strength. The book champions those children who might not seek the spotlight, but have just as much to offer.

  • Finding Your Voice
Sally learns to speak up in her own way, showing that even the smallest voice can make a difference. The theme encourages children to value their instincts and to trust that their voice matters.
